Overwintering Ducks: St. Marks NWR, with Don Morrow

  • Saint Marks National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, 1255 Lighthouse Rd St Marks, FL, 32355 United States (map)

Trip leader: Don Morrow

Meet up Location: St. Marks NWR Visitor Center parking lot

Limited to 20 Participants. Click to register via Mobilize. We have loaner binoculars, so please let us know when you register if you need to borrow a pair for this trip. Pack a lunch if you want to continue birding with Don until 2:00 PM or later.

December is prime duck time at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. Based on current conditions, we will be trying to maximize sightings of duck species, while also including other wintering birds. Expect to see 50 plus species during the course of the field trip.

Logistics: After meeting up at 8:00 AM in the parking lot of the Visitor Center, we will encourage carpooling in order to reduce our carbon footprint. We will drive the thirteen-mile round trip from the Visitor Center to the Lighthouse, making several stops based on then-current conditions. One stop may include a 1.75-mile hike. The remaining stops should have minimal walking.

We’ll break briefly for lunch. The 2:00 PM end time is aspirational. Don plans to continue birding, and participants are welcome to join him.

Mid-December weather can be freezing to warm, often during the same day. Dress in layers. Bring optics, lunch, water, sunscreen and a joyful attitude. This will be a good day of birding.
