Lake Elberta Park, Merlin, eBird, and You

Enjoy a leisurely birding walk on a paved path around the lake, about three-quarters of a mile. Kathleen Carr will demonstrate how to use the Merlin app to identify birds and how to use eBird to record your bird sightings. The Purple Martins have returned to their nesting gourds, set up for the season last month, so we should be seeing them around the lake as well as many other species.

Lake Elberta Park is one of Tallahassee’s best kept birding secrets, located on Lake Bradford Rd. between Florida A&M University and Florida State University, south of W. Gaines St. This location currently ranks #4 in terms of bird species observed at a given place in Leon County and is notable for its ease of access and birding diversity. Even on “slow” days, a casual birder should be able to see 20-25 species of birds. This park is also a chapter project in which we are planting native wildflowers and vegetation and removing nonnative plants. Learn more at: https://www.apalachee.org/lakeelberta
